Artist's Comments

RIP Eight Belles. You were a credit to your breed and to fillies everywhere.

Decided to do a quick tribute sketch. It's got a lot of flaws, but I'm ok with it. May redo it someday. :)

I was so sad when she went down she had a good race at least she went doing what she loved. Nice tribute.

Beautiful tribute.

Dr. Bramlage said he'd never seen a horse break down like that. How soon we forgot. Roving Boy broke down in both HIND legs at Santa Anita some years ago.
Everything under the sun has been blamed-track condition, breeding pradtices;even the "cruel" act of wagering on horse races-but accidents and death are a part of horse racing. I know it really hurts, but we must accept it.

With Roving Boy, it happened just after the wire. Eight Belles was almost a quarter mile after the wire and she was pulling up. Not going as fast as RB. Plus this happened on both fronts. I think that is mainly what Dr. Bramlage may have meant. It's just so unlikely that a horse would have such a catastrophic breakdown so far into the gallop out. It's something you would see if they were going at full speed.

Jumpermegs, I think it's fine the way it is. The roughness of it is nice. Also I love the way it's just grey and white. Well done.

*thinks of Go For Wand* Gah! If she'd gone down in the upper stretch-what a disaster that would have been-the result might have been a multiple horse spill.
I remember when Timely Writer broke down and took two other horses with him. That was terrible.
I see what you mean. I assumed Dr. Bramlage hadn't ever seen a horse break down in both legs at nearly the same time.
