Upset...

Mon Dec 15, 2008, 5:44 PM
I think one of the worst things, particularly for a portrait artist, is to have a client come back and say they didn't like the work they received.

Today, I had one client message me that she absolutely loved her commission, and another...

...asked me to completely redo hers.

This is a conundrum because this is the third time I've redone this one. First, because his head was messed up, which I knew and fixed it, second because the post office got it wet and mailed it back to me, so I had to COMPLETELY redo it in the course of a night, and now it just wasn't what she thought it was based on the WIPs I sent her. The biggest problem is I consider her a friend...but I guess I'm a bit upset.

Now I offered to redo it in the note I sent along with it in case something happened, but I can't say I ever expected it to come back to me. Not sure what to think, do, or say.

Can't say I've ever had this happen before, but can't really vent about it in my other journal.

I'm going to redo it. I hope we can come up with a different pose and perspective, and I'll do it. I want this to work out, and I love all the positives I've received. This kind of thing makes me wonder, though, if the niceties were false and this is truly what people think.

I'm just not good enough yet.

OMG that's awful! I'm sure all the positive feedback is genuine, and this was just a one off. It's my worst fear for someone to say they didn't like a painting they'd commissioned off me :( I'm sure it's just their issues, not your work, that is the problem.

Thank you. :( It's definitely not a good feeling, and I was just moody all day yesterday because of it! I guess the fact that I get so many commissions should be a good indicator that people like my work! haha, I move on! :D

probably didn't help that you had to redo it twice previously. I'm sorry :( it is bad enough when you're not happy with something yourself. Don't say you're not good enough - it's just a combination of bad luck and stress about the image. I will bet it happens to all commissioning artists at some point. It's definitely a good idea to try a new pose and perspective, you need something fresh to concentrate on!

Thanks. :) I'm going to focus on a few other commissions for now, and will probably come back to that one after Christmas. Hopefully I'll have a fresh perspective then!

That's also a really good idea I think, I was going to suggest that but not sure if you had time constraints with it. It's nice when the customer is understanding about these things... we're not robots, things go wrong and if you're not in the right frame of mind for good art, it's really beneficial to wait or concentrate on something else for a bit to freshen you up, otherwise it's to the detriment of the piece they're paying for!
 good luck with it!

That's so frustrating:S I love the work you did for me though, I can't wait to see them in real life:D

I'm sorry hun... it's not easy when the client dislikes your work no matter what type of art. But it happens to the best of everyone, don't get too down about it. Just do your best to get it resolved and move on. Please know that you are a very talented artist and don't get discouraged from one time!

Thank you. I'm going to finish the commissions I have in line and then come back to that one. After that I'll definitely need a break to do something for myself!

yes it's always important to take care of yourself! ...That's what I'm saying after I just blew over $200 at sephora at least... uh definitely couldn't afford that. haha
